My story
My name is Autumn Lauman. I am a mother, maker, designer, and dreamer. I was born and raised in the plains of Manitoba, and knew from a very young age that I had two loves in my life; design and nature. Being of Cree and Ojibwe descent, I find a lot of my inspiration comes from my connection with nature, and I try to showcase the beauty and appreciation I have for my fellow flora and fauna through my design work.
I spent most of my life in Winnipeg, Manitoba up until my early twenties until I decided that I needed a change. I was never really the type to sit around in one place for very long, so I packed up what little things I had and travelled across Canada a bit, until I ended up residing in British Columbia.
I went to university for Industrial Design at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, where I got my Bachelors and graduated with the 2015 Wood Co-op/Forestry Innovation Investment Industrial Design Graduation Award for my grad project, The HortiCoop. During my time at Emily Carr, I focused my studies in woodworking, ceramics, and textile design. I really enjoyed working with raw, natural materials and was very passionate about sustainability. I’m pretty proud of myself for finishing school, especially considering I ended up getting pregnant in my first year and managed to continue my studies with a newborn baby.
I really enjoy working with raw, natural materials, and am particularly drawn to wood, ceramics, and textiles.
After graduation, I took some time off to think about what I really wanted to do with myself. I wanted to start my own business that would give me the option to combine all the skills I have learned through school and life. After careful consideration, I chose to pursue a career in surface pattern design, with the final aim to develop my own textile products after I have established myself.
